Here’s what’s happening the week of April 22 – 28, 2024!

Before we get to the weekly schedule, our Queen of Hearts game had a WINNER last Friday night!!! $15,000 was paid out!

We will be starting a new board this Friday. Details to come!

Here’s the schedule for this week at Legion Post 25!

Monday, April 22, 2024 – Shuffleboard at 1 pm, Chips Ahoy at 3 pm, Darts at 6 pm, $2 Bloody Mary drinks and $1 draft beers.

Tuesday, April 23, 2024 – Taco Tuesday from 1:30 to 6:30 pm; Euchre at 1 pm; Chips Ahoy at 3 pm; SAL Bingo at 6:30 pm; $3 Margaritas (to go with your tacos!)

Wednesday, April 24, 2024 – Salisbury Steak &Chicken Wings; Chips Ahoy at 1 pm; Rocky Trop will play from 5-8 pm.

Thursday, April 25, 2024 – Create-A-Pizza from 1:30 to 6:30; Poker at 1 pm; Chips Ahoy at 3 pm.

 

Friday, April 26, 2024 – Prime Rib and Fried Fish for dinner from 4:30 to 6:30; Chips Ahoy at 1 pm; and Randy Sullens will perform from 6-9 pm.

Saturday, April 27, 2024 – Highlands County Corvettes Car Show from 11 am to 2 pm; Burgers & Dogs from 12 noon to 2 pm; Chips Ahoy at 1 pm; and Texas Hold’em at 1 pm.

Sunday, April 28, 2024 – Bar Food, and Cowboy will perform from 5-8 pm.

SNL Drive this Wednesday Night!

   Here is an important reminder that this Wednesday evening SNL Drive will be performing at Post 25 from 5-8 PM. The Post 25 Mess Hall Kitchen will be serving either Wings or Salisbury Steak for dinner!

Don’t forget Taco Tuesday and Create-A-Pizza on Thursday, from 1 pm to 6:30 PM. Also, this Friday the AMAZING George & Gwen will ROCK THE HOUSE! Let’s fill up the parking lot like we did last Friday night!

And most importantly, this Saturday, April 20, ROADKILL is back at your Post 25, 3-5 pm. “Cards crash into BINGO”! Bring friends. Get ready to be silly! We will have a 50/50 raffle too!!! Fast fun! Win meats!

Legion Post 25 Beautification Project (April Yard Party)

CALLING ALL PRESSURE WASHERS!

Greetings,
   Since last fall we have been working on Post 25’s outsides. We’ve had several “Yard Parties” and things are coming together. Actually, we have a lot more to do and several surprises in store.

On Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 8:30 AM we will be having another Post 25 Yard Party. The project for the day will be PRESSURE WASHING. If you have a pressure washer and would like to donate it for the day, or better yet, join us with your pressure washer, that would be great! We will supply the gasoline. Bring some garden hoses too.

We would like to have a squad of volunteers with as many pressure washers as we can get to complete the project in one day! The more pressure washers we have, the quicker we’ll get the project done.

This is OUR Post, yours and mine. Our goal is to get the outside all spiffed up BEFORE it gets HOT.

So, we need your help.

UPDATE: “Gator” will not be performing tonight due to a death in the family. Local favorite, Tom Hanson will be performing from 5-8 PM. The Post 25 Mess Hall will be serving Wings and Salisbury Steak for dinner from 4:30 to 6:30.

Thursday is “Create-A-Pizza Day. The Mess Hall will make you a fantastic, delicious pizza from 1:30 to 6:30. So, you can have pizza for lunch or dinner, OR BOTH if you want!

Friday night “George & Gwen” will rock the house from 6-9 PM and the Mess Hall kitchen will be serving Prime Rib and Fried Fish for dinner from 4:30 to 6:30.

Come early, eat GOOD, and dance holes in your shoes!

On Saturday, Lake Country Cruisers will be having their monthly Car & Bike Show from 11 AM to 1:30 PM. Burgers Cheeseburgers & Dogs on the grill from 12 Noon to 2 PM. Bring your appetite, the burgers are GREAT!

Did You Know? History of the Pig War by Larry Gerlack

The Almost, “Pig War” of 1859

Our Post 25 resident historian, Larry Gerlack always delivers fascinating, little-known, and mostly forgotten American history stories. Larry’s monthly history lessons are on the back of the monthly Post 25 Calendar of Events.

Here’s Larry’s essay for April 2024, “The Pig War of 1859”.

One of the little-known and strange wars of the United States took place in 1859.

The crisis came on June 15, 1859, when Lyman Cutlar, an American, shot and killed a British pig rooting in his garden. When the British authorities threatened to arrest Cutlar, and evict all Americans from the island as “trespassers”, a delegation sought military protection from a Brigadier General.

This was not the first time that one of the Belle Vue Sheep Farm’s pigs had invaded Cutlar’s farmstead on one of the San Juan Islands, between Vancouver Island (present-day Canada). But when Cutlar woke up to find a herdsman named Jacob laughing that the pig “was up to his old game”, he picked up his gun and in a moment of irritation, killed the pig!

The killing of a British pig by an American settler triggered an international confrontation that almost set the U.S. and Britain to war. (actually, it didn’t take much, as there was still a lot of animosity towards the Yanks from the British)

The war is celebrated as “The Pig War” and it was ultimately resolved by negotiations and compromise, instead of guns and force. There were no casualties, except for the pig.

We are attempting to locate a Purple Heart recipient by the name of Henry H. Peterson.

His Purple Heart medal was found in someone’s personal effects and the family has no idea who it belongs to.

They gave us the medal hoping we could solve this.

Greetings Post 25 Family,

Well, that nasty freezing winter is finally behind us! (a little Northern humor)

Many of our Northern friends are heading back, let’s wish them a safe journey to their destinations.

The Sons of the American Legion and Legion members have been doing “Yard Parties”, which is cleaning up around the Post and it looks great! Thank you to Jake Gordon and Scott Teeters for heading this up.

The Luau was a HUGE success! A BIG THANKS to the Auxiliary for making this a great fun night.

The Kitchen is open from 1 PM to 7 PM. EXCEPT for Friday night’s Fried Fish and Prime Rib, we are now serving the dinner specials all day, along with the regular Cafe menu. Plus Peg will also be adding some new, light-bite choices to the menu, so come check out the lighted board by the Mess Hall Kitchen window to see what’s new.

April Events
April 6 & 20, 2024 – TJ Karaoke will be at Post 25 with open mics from 5-8 PM.

April 8, 2024 – This is Election Day for Post 25 Officers. It is extremely important that we all vote to keep Post 25 out front. We need the right people in the right positions. Voting is from 12 Noon to 6 PM. Please bring your current 2024 Legion card.

April 13, 2024 – Auxiliary Sock Hop! Gals, put your poodle skirts and tight white t-shirts on, and come have a good time! Memories Dance Party Band will be providing the Golden Oldies music!

April 13, 2024 – Lake Country Cruisers Car & Bike Show, 11 am to 1:30 pm. Classic cars and motorcycles are invited. Burgers & Dogs for lunch from 12 Noon to 2 pm.

April 20, 2024 – “ROADKILL!” from 3-5 pm. BINGO meets Cards! Fast fun! Win MEATS. Win door Prizes and $$$ from the V-52 Game and the 50/50 Raffle (New)!

The Beautification of Post 25 Continues!

   While the weather has been cool, we have been working on sprucing up the outside of Post 25. The outside grill still needs electrical work and the installation of exhaust fans. We only have a few more easy projects we’d like to wrap up before it gets HOT.

Post 25 Yard Party! This Thursday! 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM

Here’s what we’d like to accomplish this
Thursday, March 28, starting at 8:30 AM.

* Stack the aluminum sheets and weed wack

* Move the Dunker behind one of the storage sheds

* Remove and dismantle the broken gate

* Misc. stuff removed from around the grounds

* Weed and spray around the perimeter of the building

* More trimming around the outer perimeter of the property

* Trimming around the wood pile

Bring your work gloves and any yard tools you think might help. Commander Fred will supply the Dunkin Donuts and Coffee!

Perhaps, after we complete our outside beautification project, we can have a Bond Fire Party out back!

Tuesday, March 19, 2024 – Draft beers are just $1 and Margaritas are just $3 (goes perfectly with the tacos!). Bar Games: Eucher at 1 pm, Chips Ahoy at 3 pm, and Sons of the American Legion BINGO at 6:30 pm.

Wednesday, March 20, 2024 – Wednesday Night Wings or Salisbury Steak with Randy Sullens playing from 5-8 pm. Bar Games: Chips Ahoy at 1 pm, Ship-Captain-Crew at 6 pm.

ROADKILL UPDATE!

Last Saturday’s ROADKILL game was a big success. We had over 40 players and LOTS of fun! Big “THANKS” to Jean Pheiffer, and Roger & Carolyn Hanson for all their help.
